Facelift: The Procedure

Rhytidectomy is the medical term for facelift surgery and surgically improves the midface and jawline regions of the face. Facelift surgery redrapes and resuspends the skin and deeper tissues of the face and neck to produce a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Younger faces classically follow an inverted pyramid appearance that is highlighted by adequate cheek and jaw projection and definition. As the face ages, the forces of gravity flip the pyramid; typical signs of facial aging include loss of volume and sagging in the midface, jowling (sagging of skin below the jawline) with decreased jawline definition, increased neck skin laxity, and increased neck muscle banding. While non-surgical procedures ranging from filler injections to threading may provide temporary improvement, the skin and soft tissue changes in the face and neck can only be definitively corrected with surgery. Neck Lift: The Procedure

Neck lift is a type of surgery that rejuvenates the neck region.

Similar to facelift surgery, this procedure repositions the skin and deeper tissues of the neck to restore a more youthful contour. Depending on the facial anatomy and treatment goals of our Newtown neck lift patients, this procedure may be performed as a stand alone surgery or in combination with a facelift. We will thoroughly evaluate each patient to determine whether they are a candidate for this procedure.

What To Expect After a Facelift And Neck Lift

Every facelift and neck lift procedure is unique and tailored to the individual patient. Therefore, the types of scars as well as extent of swelling, bruising, and tenderness that occur after surgery will vary by patient. Closed suction drains are commonly placed in the surgical sites underneath the skin to help reduce the formation of a hematoma (blood fluid collection) or seroma (serous fluid collection) that may interfere with healing after surgery. A compression dressing is applied around the face and neck immediately following surgery to prevent hematoma or seroma formation as well. Each facelift and neck lift patient will follow-up with us one day after surgery for drain removal and compression dressing replacement and then at one and two weeks after surgery for suture and staple removal.

Any immediate bruising and swelling can be mitigated with icing, head elevation, and compression dressing adherence with the majority of these issues subsiding by two weeks out from surgery. Patients who undergo additional fat transfer may experience swelling that takes up to one month to resolve. Pain following surgery is usually managed well with prescribed pain medication. Improvement in the appearance of the surgically addressed areas of face and neck is usually seen immediately or after most of the swelling has subsided. The ideal candidate for facelift and neck lift surgery is a healthy individual who has no remarkable medical or surgical history, does not smoke or take blood-thinning medications, and has strong bony facial features, normal hyoid position, and adequate skin elasticity. Patients with moderate to significant skin and soft tissue laxity in the midface, lower face, and neck areas will most benefit from aging face surgery. The Dedo classification of the aging neck is one guide that helps plastic surgeons determine ideal candidates for facelift and neck lift; Class VI patients who are defined by an abnormal hyoid position will likely have suboptimal results with facelift and neck lift surgery.
