Rhytidectomy is the medical term for facelift surgery and surgically improves the midface and jawline regions of the face. Facelift surgery redrapes and resuspends the skin and deeper tissues of the face and neck to produce a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
Younger faces classically follow an inverted pyramid appearance that is highlighted by adequate cheek and jaw projection and definition. As the face ages, the forces of gravity flip the pyramid; typical signs of facial aging include loss of volume and sagging in the midface, jowling (sagging of skin below the jawline) with decreased jawline definition, increased neck skin laxity, and increased neck muscle banding. While non-surgical procedures ranging from filler injections to threading may provide temporary improvement, the skin and soft tissue changes in the face and neck can only be definitively corrected with surgery. Facelift surgery demands the expertise of a surgeon who specializes in plastic surgery of the face and demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy well. At Rejuvenation Medical Aesthetics, we strive to execute each facelift surgery according to the unique anatomy and surgical needs of the individual patient.
Neck lift is a type of surgery that rejuvenates the neck region.
Similar to facelift surgery, this procedure repositions the skin and deeper tissues of the neck to restore a more youthful contour. Depending on the facial anatomy and treatment goals of our Newtown neck lift patients, this procedure may be performed as a stand alone surgery or in combination with a facelift. We will thoroughly evaluate each patient to determine whether they are a candidate for this procedure.
Every facelift and neck lift procedure is unique and tailored to the individual patient. Therefore, the types of scars as well as extent of swelling, bruising, and tenderness that occur after surgery will vary by patient. Closed suction drains are commonly placed in the surgical sites underneath the skin to help reduce the formation of a hematoma (blood fluid collection) or seroma (serous fluid collection) that may interfere with healing after surgery. A compression dressing is applied around the face and neck immediately following surgery to prevent hematoma or seroma formation as well. Each facelift and neck lift patient will follow-up with us one day after surgery for drain removal and compression dressing replacement and then at one and two weeks after surgery for suture and staple removal.
Any immediate bruising and swelling can be mitigated with icing, head elevation, and compression dressing adherence with the majority of these issues subsiding by two weeks out from surgery. Patients who undergo additional fat transfer may experience swelling that takes up to one month to resolve. Pain following surgery is usually managed well with prescribed pain medication. Improvement in the appearance of the surgically addressed areas of face and neck is usually seen immediately or after most of the swelling has subsided. At Rejuvenation Medical Aesthetics we maintain regular follow-ups with our patients to ensure that every patient heals well and is satisfied with their results.
The ideal candidate for facelift and neck lift surgery is a healthy individual who has no remarkable medical or surgical history, does not smoke or take blood-thinning medications, and has strong bony facial features, normal hyoid position, and adequate skin elasticity. Patients with moderate to significant skin and soft tissue laxity in the midface, lower face, and neck areas will most benefit from aging face surgery. The Dedo classification of the aging neck is one guide that helps plastic surgeons determine ideal candidates for facelift and neck lift; Class VI patients who are defined by an abnormal hyoid position will likely have suboptimal results with facelift and neck lift surgery. RMA relies on the Dedo classification principles as well as our aesthetic experience and intuition to create beautiful, natural results in aging patients who would most benefit from facelift and neck lift surgery.
Facial plastic surgery specializes exclusively in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the face and neck.
At Rejuvenation Medical Aesthetics, we devote the necessary time and effort with every patient to formulate the best surgical approach and establish realistic expectations for surgery. Our technique is centered on achieving beautiful, natural results catered to the facial anatomy of the individual patient. Our Facial Plastic Surgeon's approach repositions the skin and the deeper suspensory tissue layers including the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer and also places incisions along the hairline and in natural skin creases for minimal scarring. Furthermore, we routinely advocate for fat transfer as an adjunct procedure to a facelift and neck lift to correct facial volume loss and further enhance a patient’s surgical results. Our aim is to create a refreshed and unoperated look for every facelift and neck lift patient.
Platysma banding a common sign of aging in the neck and is associated with appearance of vertical neck lines in the midline of the neck that become more visibly apparent with facial animation. There are several non-surgical and surgical treatment options that address platysma banding ranging from neurotoxin to platysma plication, which can be performed at the time of neck lift surgery. We are experienced in both non-surgical and surgical management of platysma banding and will help determine the best treatment plan for patients with this condition based on their individual anatomy and treatment goals.
It is common for other procedures to be performed in conjunction with facelift surgery. They include but are not limited to neck lift, platysma plication, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), fat transfer, submental (chin) liposuction, and chin augmentation. We will discuss with each Newtown facelift candidate whether they would benefit from additional procedures at the time of their facelift surgery to maximize their surgical outcome.
Plastic surgeons who specialize in surgery of the aging face may use different procedure names to help distinguish their surgical approach for purposes of marketing and patient education.
Certain procedure labels such as lower facelift and mini facelift may give patients the impression that the expected procedure is less invasive with shorter downtime compared to traditional facelift surgery. Lower facelift is usually a type of facelift procedure that only addresses the lower face including the jawline. Mini facelift can be interpreted as a less invasive facelift surgery for patients with milder skin and soft tissue laxity issues that involves smaller incisions and less tissue resuspension. We plan a customized surgical approach for each facelift patient and strive to ensure that both us and the patient are on the same page regarding surgery expectations.
